5th Annual Craft for Shelters Day RESULTS!

We crafted for 6 hours straight like a bunch of mad ladies, ha!  I'm very pleased with the finished items this year.  Sebastian stopped by Quality Sewing and Vacuum to count everything before we take all the items to Seattle Animal Shelter next week.

We completed:
                     - 26 bandanas
                     - 30 rope toys
                     - 9 crate beds
                     - 36 cat security blankets (new project this year!)

As usual, we had some very talented volunteers!  Check out the monster rope toys our friend Tammy made.

Sebastian sure likes this rope toy but he knows there's another dog out there who could use it more.  Rope toys help give shelter dogs some comfort and something extra to chew on in their crates.

We had a new project this year that I loved - cat security blankets!  After I contacted the volunteer coordinator at Seattle Animal Shelter, I learned they had a huge need for these cat blankets.  The coordinator told me, "These are very special blankets… they will carry the cat’s scent with them to the new home and while they are in the shelter as their bedding is rotated and all other scents around them are replaced, the blankets will stay untouched. Think of them as destressing blankets more than for warmth… kitties will have other bedding for this purpose."

I love this idea.  Makes me wonder how many other shelters out there could use blankets like these.  They are only 15 inch squares and so easy to make.  We made some with one layer of fleece and some with double-sided flannel.  We also used a serger to finish the edges.  I totally recommend this project to anyone out there wanting to make items for shelter cats!

Cheers to National Craft for your Local Shelters Day!

DIY Snowy Mountain Peak Pet Tent

Sebastian has moved to the mountains!

This adorable pet tent is perfect for long afternoon naps.  Check out how easy you can make one from a cardboard box and tape.  A must-have for any sleepy dog or cat!

INSTRUCTIONS:
What you'll need:
For cardboard construction: Square cardboard box (ours is 14x14 inches, though we wish we would have used a bigger box), packaging tape or duct tape, scissors, long yard stick or quilting ruler, sharpie.
For the outside cover: Brown and white fleece, sewing machine

DIY Curtains From a Pair of Pants - Pantains!

I think this may be my silliest creation of 2014.  I bought these pants from the thrift store for 95 cents and now they are Sebastian's new curtains for his bed overlooking the not-so-glamorous craft room.  He likes to sleep and he likes to be in whatever room I'm in.  With that being said,  it only makes sense to give him his own personal space in every room of the house.

This project has some basic sewing, but the sewing part could be substituted for fabric glue.  Read on to  make your own!

INSTRUCTIONS

What you'll need:
Spring Tension Rod
Pair of Pants (or capris?) wider than tension rod
Ribbon
Sewing machine or glue

Basically, chop it.  Sew it.  Hang it.  HA!

This is a bookshelf with those adjustable shelving holes and the hooks screwed into them perfectly.  Talk about meant to be!  But of course the curtains still look great without hooks if you don't want to put holes into your furniture.

Sebastian and I want to see "pantains" on all those crazy cool dog beds incorporated into furniture around the house!  You know, like those beds inside nightstands and coffee tables?  It's kind of a thing.

DIY Paw Print - Heart Edition

Love is in the air!  This cute little wine bottle is the sweetest keepsake and perfect for displaying flowers.

INSTRUCTIONS:
You'll need FIMO Air Light in white (clay that air dries), heart-shaped cookie cutter, wine bottle, strong glue, vinyl spackling, sand paper, gold spray paint, and white spray paint.

This project is super fun and easy.  Sebastian says it's a "must do!"  Also, we are so happy with the Fimo Air Light clay.  It's soft and easy to work with.  We highly recommend it for any DIY paw print project!

DIY Crayon Art

We can't help but notice the crayon art movement when we browse pinterest.  Wow!  I just had to try one myself.  I wanted it to look like an abstract Sebastian.  But as it turns out, crayons have a mind of their own!  This is my second attempt.  I recommend doing a practice one first and be prepared for it to look nothing like what you had planned.  BOL!

INSTRUCTIONS:

What you'll need - Artist Canvas (the one in this photo is a 16X20), pack of crayons, toothpicks, blow dryer, pencil, black and white paint, small paintbrush.

Melting crayons with a blow dryer turns out to be quite a mess (I learned from my first try) so I covered my table with paper and built a cardboard shield to block all of the flying specks of crayons.

Make sure to chop up a bunch of crayons in 1/4" pieces or less before you start.  A small piece of crayon goes a long way!  I used toothpicks to hold them down to keep my fingers out of the way of the hot blow dryer.

There you have it!  I love how colorful it is.

DIY Dog Silhouette Leash Rack

We love the way this cute little leash rack turned out.  Make your own of your own pooch or cat by following our instructions below!  I just free-handed the shape of Sebastian's silhouette, but I imagine you can just cut out a photo of your dog's back and trace that shape onto a 5"X7" wooden plaque too.

I was pretty worried about my drawing skills because Sebastian started off looking like a cat!!!  But luckily I was able to make it look more like him once I painted on the "fur."

Hang your adorable leash rack up somewhere it will be seen!  This plaque didn't have anything on the back so we attached a small picture hanger.  Leashes are not that heavy so a picture hanger should do the trick!

Cinco De Mayo - DIY Mini Flag Banner and Poncho

It's May and we are getting festive over here for Cinco De Mayo!
We found this adorable mini sombrero at Party City
(it's for humans, but I tied the chin strap to fit Sebastian's head).

We made the flag banner and poncho from recycled t-shirts.  Instructions below!

And that's all folks.

Nap time.
