Second Annual National Craft for your Local Shelters Day was a success!

Here in Fresno, CA, we had a blast crafting all day Saturday at a local craft store called Craftopia.

Together we created:

54 Bandanas

30 Dog and Cat Bowls

51 Toys

Huge thank you to all of our local volunteers for helping us reach our goal of being able to help 10 local shelters.

Special thanks to:

Kirsten Gould of Craftopia for providing her store, sewing machines, and mass-producing bandanas.

Me'N'Eds Pizza for their generous donation of pizza to all of our volunteers.

iLovetoCreate for their generous donation of ceramic bowls and painting supplies.

Aloha Pet Sitting for their generous donation of quality fabric for bandanas.

Laura Fraedrich for her encouragement, support, and managing ceramic bowl station.

Cindy Shepherd for her help and managing rope toy station.

We couldn't have done it without you all!!!

Help Spread the Word - Craft for Shelters

Take a photo of your dog with a sign like this and share it/send it to me!  Help Sebastian and me spread the word!

Here's cute little Dora from The Peculiar Palette with the official day, but you can craft any day and all year long for your local shelters (obviously)!

Project Ideas for NCLSD

Need ideas for National Craft for your Local Shelters Day?  Look no further than our roundups from last year!  Click on the links below.

And here's a link to a new rope toy tutorial that is beautifully demonstrated.  Did I mention what great feedback I got from our local shelters on toys similar to this one that we donated?  And no sewing involved???  They are a must!

If you have a DIY craft or something you've stumbled upon that you think would be perfect for shelter dogs, please post the link in the comments.  We'd love to see and share!

How to Throw a Successful Craft Party for NCLSD

Yay, we are super excited it's time for round two!  Wow how time flies.  I'll be posting daily about this event and what you can do to help.  You can also read last year's article about NCLSD over at Pet360 or visit the Craft for Shelters tab on this blog.

Craft parties are so much fun and it always amazes me how many people join in when it's for a good cause.  Here are some things to think about when planning yours.

1.  Decide on a shelter (or two) to donate to - contact them and make sure they want to receive your donation.

2.  What will you make?  If you are not sure what to make, ask your shelter of choice what it is they could use the most - besides money and food of course.

3.  Supplies.  What materials will you need?  Utilize what you know you are great at and make sure your "game plan" is realistic.  Do you need a pattern?  How long does it take to make one of your items?  Etc.  If you decide on "adopt me" items like vests or bandanas, make them bright and eye-catching.

4.  Set a date and organize a craft night with your crafty friends just for this project.

5. Create stations. For example, a few people can cut fabric while others sew pieces together.

6.  Don't forget the cats and other animals in shelters.  Cats could use bandanas for adoptable pictures and to help attract attention.

If you have questions or suggestions, leave a comment.  We'd love to hear from you!

DIY Candy Crush Color Bomb Squeak Toy

Yeah, we're addicted too.

We can't help but notice the Candy Crush craze.  It's everywhere.  Everyone is doing it.  And In April, Buzzfeed reported Candy Crush as the highest grossing app in the app store and the biggest app on facebook.  Scary!

While we were waiting for more lives on Candy Crush to accumulate, I decided to make Sebastian his own Color Bomb Squeak Toy.

As always, here's a tutorial:

Colorbomb to the rescue!
